Legislators need to look in the mirror

The latest targets in the battle to balance budgets are former American heroes: hardworking teachers, firefighters and police who are the safety net in our communities.

Ironically, those supporting the insults and threats against these heroes are members of Congress who often have little to contribute. Where are the arrests for bankers who again plundered the worldwide economy? Where are the congressional investigation committees that should have been formed to not only jail the thieves that triggered trillions of dollars of losses, but also to recover the stolen money?

The billions to be gained here would go a long way to help ailing state and local budgets. Why not go after the disgustingly evil people who had no regard for lives they would destroy, instead of trying to vilify the champions of our society who have sometimes sacrificed their own lives? The priorities of government could not be more wrong.

A final irony of note is that, according to the National Taxpayers Union, some legislators are now eligible for pensions in excess of $4 million. So if their search for waste is to be complete, they better check the nearest mirror.
