No society can legislate morality

Nearly every day we pick up the daily paper and read of the moral terpitude infecting our society. When seeking an answer to what has gone so obviously wrong, many look to the state of politics in our society.

Politics by nature are staffed by a transitory group of people that mostly reflect the society it represents. These people are entrusted by the people they represent to be stewards of the common good and maintenance of the agreed upon government functions.

Much like society at large, there are good and bad stewards, therefore at no point are they charged with providing the nations moral guidance.

We hope they are moral and that they serve as examples of rectitude and high mindedness. The answer to much of what we see now lies beyond the political.

For thousands of years there has been a path of righteousness marked for us. Several inspired authors have left us a guide book on how to abide our relationship with each other.

At some point this system was intentionally painted as antiquated or inadequate for today’s world. I would submit that what is needed today is a revival, a renewed embrace of the moral certitude inculcated by these inspired manuscripts.

No society can legislate morality, it springs forth from the knowledge that there is a higher power than government, and the realization that an irrational obsession with immediate gratification only leads to a nihilistic society that is not sustainable.
