Joe Biden is searching for a Vice President. Why Not Governor Wolf?

Something interesting is playing out in this year’s presidential election and it is a perfect example of how identity politics is destroying the Democratic Party. Joe Biden, now bunkered down in his basement, is currently Zooming the internet vetting his potential vice presidential candidate. Biden’s choice is supposed to be announced in the next few weeks.

A vice presidential vetting process and the actual choice itself is always overblown. It gets way too much media coverage. Most voters don’t even care who the running mate of a presidential candidate is. But this is not the case this election cycle. Considering Biden’s age, 77, and his numerous gaffs on cable news interviews lately, Biden’s selection of a vice presidential running mate might be the most critical choice he has made in his political career.

And as usual “middle class” Joe is blowing it. In the last Democratic Party debate against Bernie Sanders, Biden boxed himself in by committing to picking a woman as his running mate.
“I commit that I will, in fact, pick a woman to be vice president. There are a number of women qualified to be president tomorrow,” said Biden, adding, “I would pick a woman to be my vice president.”
National Democratic pundits are now questioning Biden’s logic. A female running mate might fire up the base in liberal states Biden will already win. But it will do little to help him in the Midwest, rust belt states that Trump won in 2016. Some are even pushing Governor Cuomo of New York as Biden’s running mate. But why? Biden will win the state of New York anyways.

There is one Democratic Governor in a vital swing state that if picked, would pretty much guarantee a Biden victory over Trump in November. Who is it? You are correct. The Governor of Pennsylvania, Tom Wolf.

It is baffling to me how Biden and his top staffers cannot see this. Does the emphasis on identity politics just throw all logic out the window? If Biden chooses Wolf as his running mate, you can pretty much put Pennsylvania the blue Democrat win column on election night.

Wolf’s overall approval rating is between 46-48%. In the latest Fox News Poll, a significant majority of Pennsylvanians approve of Gov. Tom Wolf’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak. 68% of registered or likely Pennsylvania voters polled said that they approve of Wolf’s managing of the coronavirus, while 18% disapprove, and 13% said that they are unsure. With these poll numbers there is no doubt that Wolf could deliver Pennsylvania for Biden on election night.

Biden’s choice for a running mate will tell us a lot. It will highlight how identity politics is driving the Democratic Party agenda right now. But if the choice comes down to choosing emotion over logic in today’s Democratic Party, I think we already know what that choice will be.
